Ben Foster's proposed flag for Palmerston North has heightened interest in a new symbol of civic pride.Palmerston North's bonding with the green and white of its Turbos could be reflected in a new city flag. The idea has been hoisted by Massey University planning student Ben Foster and city councillors are interested.Foster said he came up with the inspiration after walking past the cenotaph in The Square and seeing the current city flag, a complicated coat of arms on a white background.' I thought, I can improve on that.' READ MORE:.Foster said a flag should be simple, using only two or three colours that would look good from a distance, and capture something distinctive about the city.He had chosen the mountains in the background, lush plains below, and the wavy lines of the Manawatū River and streams for his design. He said cities around the world such as Tokyo, Barcelona, Chicago, Denver and Amsterdam had flags that gave citizens a symbol to rally under and feel proud of.' Great cities have great flags, so why doesn't Palmerston North?' Other New Zealand cities have flags, including Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin, but most of them incorporated coats of arms.

Palmerston North's coat of arms flies on a white banner, but is hardly a flag.Massey University senior researcher and a member of the team that led debate ahead of New Zealand's flag referendum, Malcolm Mulholland, said Foster had made a great start designing something simple with a few strong colours. But he said he would like to have something included that was distinctive and unique to the city.' A number of cities and regions could claim the ranges and a river.' The missing element could be a wind turbine.' He said a good flag should engender a sense of patriotism, make people's hearts beat faster and be recognisable to outsiders. The council has agreed to invite comments about a flag for the city in its consultation document about its draft annual plan for 2019-20.
